Delivering Peace of Mind & Preventative Care in Cornwall

Alex Fulcher | 22 Jan, 2025 |

In Cornwall, where distance often creates barriers to traditional care delivery, an innovative partnership between Corserv Care and 2iC-Care is reshaping how people receive support. For residents like Linda and her husband/unpaid carer Glyn, this means more than just monitoring – it is about maintaining independence while ensuring safety and peace of mind.

Traditional care often means reacting to problems after they occur. But Andi, our innovative dispersed alarm unit and preventative care solution, shows how early intervention can transform lives—as demonstrated by Linda and Glyn's story. For Glyn, it means having the confidence to leave the house, knowing Linda is safe. For Linda, it means maintaining dignity and independence while having support when needed. And for daughter Jayne, it means she can step in to offer support before issues escalate.

Breaking New Ground in Care Delivery

The digital switchover presented both a challenge and an opportunity. Through their strategic partnership, Corserv Care and 2iC-Care are addressing several critical challenges:

Rural Connectivity

By using TEC, care providers can now support residents effectively despite geographical barriers. Andi's multi-connectivity approach - using Wi-Fi, ethernet, and 4G roaming SIM - ensures reliable communication in Cornwall even in more isolated areas like North Yorkshire.

Resource Optimisation

Smart TEC such as Andi helps care teams work more efficiently, ensuring resources are directed where they are needed most. The data-driven insights Andi provides helps the Council to right-size support packages based on actual usage patterns and care needs, reducing unnecessary spending while maintaining or improving care quality. This strategic resource allocation is particularly crucial across Cornwall's dispersed communities.

Most importantly, Andi has the unique ability to connect with many types of care peripherals through RF868, Bluetooth, Zigbee, or Wi-Fi meaning the Council can protect their investment in existing analogue peripherals while gradually transitioning to newer technologies.

Personalised Care

This interoperability transforms how care packages can evolve with individual needs. From basic telecare to sophisticated medical monitoring, support can be adjusted without requiring a complete system change. For Linda and Glyn, this meant starting with basic monitoring that can change as their needs change, ensuring they always have the right level of support.

Workforce Development

The introduction of innovative TEC can help attract and retain care professionals by giving them better tools and data to support their expertise. This modernisation of care delivery makes the sector more appealing to new generations of care workers while enhancing the capabilities of experienced staff. This was evident in the collaboration with HMT, where the data from Andi empowered carers and informed person-centred conversations about sleep hygiene, among other concerns.

The Andi Impact in Cornwall

The ripple effects of this transformation extend throughout the community:

For Local Healthcare

Better preventative care means reduced pressure on local healthcare services and fewer unnecessary hospital admissions. Linda's experience with early UTI detection shows how proactive monitoring can prevent hospital stays. (In the Wirral, Andi detected a UTI and prevented a crisis.)

For Families

The impact extends beyond the immediate care recipient. For families like Linda and Glynn's, Andi provides reassurance that their loved ones are safe while maintaining their independence. Their daughter's peace of mind knowing both parents are supported shows how TEC can strengthen family relationships rather than replace them.

Looking to the Future

This partnership is about creating a sustainable care model that can adapt to growing demands while maintaining quality. Stories like Linda and Glyn's demonstrate that when TEC is implemented thoughtfully, with a focus on human outcomes rather than just digital capabilities, it can create meaningful change that benefits everyone involved in the care journey.

The transformation happening in Cornwall is not just about implementing digital TEC– it is about reimagining how we support and care for people in their communities. It is about finding the perfect balance between independence and support, between human touch and technological innovation. As this model continues to evolve and prove its value through real-world impact on people's lives, it could well become a blueprint for care delivery in other rural and challenging geographic areas.

Cornwall's success shows that when technology solutions are chosen with care and consideration for individual needs, they can enhance rather than replace the human elements that make care services so vital to our communities.
